Starship Technologies is transforming last mile delivery, and as Europe’s leading last mile logistics real estate provider, Mileway is providing the strategic space it needs to scale efficiently and sustainably.
As the company expands across Scandinavia, Mileway is providing space for Starship in Pitäjänmäki, one of Helsinki’s key commercial and logistics hubs. Alongside its Mileway site in Stockholm, the new location gives the autonomous delivery company room to grow, strengthen operations, and serve consumers with ease.
Starship’s autonomous robots use only a fraction of the energy required by traditional delivery vehicles, significantly reducing both costs and carbon impact. It’s a smarter, cleaner future for on-demand and last mile delivery – and we’re proud to help make it possible.
Mileway: Tell us about who you are and the communities you serve…
Starship Technologies: We’re leaders in autonomous delivery, operating a fleet of self-driving robots that deliver food, groceries and packages in neighbourhoods, university campuses and business districts. We serve communities across 7 countries, including the US, UK, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. We help consumers access everyday essentials conveniently while reducing carbon emissions from last mile delivery.
What have been some of the key milestones shaping your growth journey (so far)?
Since our launch in 2014, we’ve completed over nine million autonomous deliveries covering over 12 million miles – five times more than all our competitors combined. We have plans to scale the world’s largest autonomous delivery fleet from more than 2,700 robots today to over 12,000 by 2027. We operate zero-emission last mile delivery, preventing over 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions in our European operations.
Looking ahead, what opportunities are you focused on?
We’re focused on geographic expansion, deepening partnerships with major food and retail brands and continuing to prove that autonomous delivery is not just viable but preferable for last mile logistics. We’re also committed to advancing our technology to handle increasingly complex delivery scenarios and weather conditions – while maintaining our focus on sustainability and community integration.
What made Atomitie 1 the right fit to scale your Finnish operations?
Finland has been a key market for us since our early days, and we recently reached one million deliveries here. As we outgrew our previous hub, we needed a larger space with reliable infrastructure and a strategic location. This asset offers excellent access to major roads and transport links, enabling efficient movement of robots and supplies and supporting our continued growth in the region.
What impact has it had on efficiency, service delivery and your ability to scale?
Our dedicated space has significantly improved our operational efficiency – we can now service more robots simultaneously, reduce downtime and scale our fleet to meet growing demand.
How does the space support your sustainability commitments and long-term resilience?
Sustainability is core to our mission – we have prevented over 650 tonnes of CO2 emissions in our European operations. Our Atomitie 1 hub supports our zero-emission delivery model by providing efficient charging infrastructure and optimised logistics that minimise energy consumption. It allows us to maintain our robots properly, extending their lifespan and reducing waste. By consolidating operations efficiently, we reduce our overall environmental footprint while building resilience through reliable, weather-protected facilities.
What matters most to you in a long-term real estate partner?
Given how quickly our operations evolve, it’s essential to work with a partner who understands our need for flexibility in both lease terms and refurbishment requirements. Mileway has been responsive and supportive, and our relationship has been very positive so far. We also secured our new hub in Stockholm through Mileway, which further strengthened our partnership.
During the full refurbishment of the premises, communication was smooth and Asset Manager, Juha-Matti Kyntäjä (above right, with Pierpaolo Capra, Starship Technologies Operations Specialist), was consistently open and committed to creating a space that would serve us well for years. We had several specific requests, and Mileway has delivered on them. It truly felt like a collaborative effort rather than a one-sided process.
With the strategic last mile space to grow, Starship Technologies’ large-scale expansion is now well underway and we look forward to building on our successful partnership in the years ahead. As the leading pan-European last mile logistics real estate company, we take great pride in supporting our customers’ long term, sustainable growth.
