Mileway, the leading pan-European last mile logistics real estate company, today announces that it has signed a new lease agreement with online grocery retailer, Picnic, as the business continues to scale its operations across Europe.
The approximately 21,000 sqm space in Bremen, Germany – which was developed speculatively and completed in March 2023 – will be used as Picnic’s main logistics fulfilment centre for the city, as well as to feed products to nearby distribution hubs. The property has a DGNB Gold rating and features electric vehicle charging stations, with the potential to accommodate roof top photovoltaic solar panels.
The agreement takes Picnic to seven sites with Mileway since the companies first started working together in the Netherlands in 2019. Since then, Mileway has supported Picnic’s expansion across the Netherlands and into France and Germany.
Founded in 2015, Picnic is an online supermarket, offering low-cost grocery delivery. Named the fastest growing company in the Netherlands in 2019, technology and logistics are at the heart of the company. Orders are made via an app and groceries delivered from Picnic’s distribution hubs to customers’ homes, using 100% electric vehicles. This cuts out the need for consumer-facing city centre locations and fosters a supply chain that fights food waste.
Thomas ten Bokum, Chief Real Estate Officer at Mileway, commented: “Since launching in 2015, Picnic has been changing the way consumers shop for groceries with a business model grounded in sustainability. We are proud that our partnership has given the company the locations it needs – across a number of urban markets – to connect to the consumers it serves, and in doing so fulfil its growth aspirations.”
Michiel Muller, Founder, Picnic, added:
“Mileway, with its extensive portfolio of last mile properties, has been an important partner as we have grown our presence across the Netherlands, and into Germany and France. This new lease in Germany shows how our business and property needs continue to evolve as we further scale across Europe and we look forward to further working with them.”
